بدأت هذه الصناعة بمنتصف الستنيات من القرن الماضى على يد سركيس مسروبيات صاحب اول ورشة لصناعة البامبو فى مصر .

ثم تعلمها الحاج اسماعيل عبد النعيم وتوسع فى صناعتها حتى انتشرت صناعة البامبو فى انحاء مصر .

ويقول م/ عاصم اسماعيل احد ابناء الحاج / اسماعيل عبد النعيم الذى يعمل فى هذا المجال منذ 50 عاما :ان هذه الصناعة من الصناعات الفنيه الرفيعه التى تحتاج لذوق ومهاره وابداع الحرفى ؛ لتعدد اشكالها النابع عن اختلاف الموديلات والاذواق .

ويضيف ان اثاث البامبو يكثر استخدامه فى الاماكن المفتوحه لانه يتحمل الحرارة ولا ينقلها ولا يتاثر باشعة الشمس القوية وهو ما يجعل استخدامه افضل بكثير من استخدام الاثاث المصنوع من الحديد او البلاستك .

وعن مشاكل المهنه يقول م/ عاصم اسماعيل ان الانتاج المحلى يكفى احتياجات السوق ، الا انه رغم ذلك لا يمكنهم التوسع لتصدير الاثاث الجاهز نظرا لقلة الايدى المدربة وعدم وجود مراكز لتاهيل للعمل فى صناعة اثاث البامبو بالرغم من ارتفاع اجر العامل فى هذه المهنة .

هذا بالاضافه الى منافسة البامبو المستورد والوارد من دول اندونسيا وسنغافورة ودول جنوب شرق اسيا ؛ خاصة انها تتمتع بذوق عال واشكال مختلفه عما يتم تصنيعة فى مصر ؛ الا ان الكثير يقبل على البامبو المحلى ؛ لانه اقل ثمنا من المستورد والذى يناسب مع المستهلك المصرى

وعن مدى الاقبال على الاثاث المصنع من البامبو يقول الحاج / عادل اسماعيل احد مؤسسين صناعة البامبو بمصر وأبن من أبناء الحاج إسماعيل :

ان منتجات البامبو يكثر الاقبال عليها من النوادى ؛ والكافيتريات ؛ والحدائق ؛ والشاليهات والفنادق والقرى السياحية .

ويرجع ذلك لمتانتها وقدرتها علىتحمل الرطوبة العالية وتقلبات الجو وقوة الاستخدام بالاضافه الى سهولة تنظيفها وخفة وزنها ؛ لذا تفضل عن البلاستك . ورغم ان سعر كرسى البامبو اضعاف سعر مثيلة المصنع من البلاستك ؛ غير ان العمر الافتراضى للبامبو من10 الى 50 عاما ويمكن صيانته فيطول عمره اكثر اكثر .
